Abstract
Given the Chinese Hanzi and Japanese Kanji characters share considerably similar writing systems and word meanings (Hu, 2012), the purpose of this study is to examine the practice and effectiveness of teachers’ collaborative teaching using the researchers' Hanzi-And-Kanzi character comparisons (HAKCC) instructional model on students’ character acquisition. Based on a mixed methods research design, the results from this study will explore whether or not this collaborative teaching model increases students’ interest in learning Mandarin Chinese, reduces their fear of learning Chinese Hanzi characters, and improves their Hanzi and Kanji character learning outcomes.
