Abstract
The GLOBE Comparing Surface and Subterranean Environments Field Guide provides an interdisciplinary framework for exploring the physical, chemical, and biological connections between surface environments and the subterranean systems beneath them. Designed for field-based education and undergraduate instruction, the guide supports direct observation, data collection, and comparative analysis across environments such as soils, karst landscapes, caves, groundwater systems, and surface waters using existing GLOBE protocols.
Through structured activities and guiding questions, the field guide emphasizes how water, energy, and nutrients move between surface and subsurface systems, shaping geological features, ecosystem processes, and environmental conditions. By integrating concepts from Earth science, hydrology, biology, and environmental science, the guide promotes systems thinking, scientific reasoning, and environmental literacy while highlighting the role of subterranean environments in sustaining surface ecosystems.
