The Influence of Religion on Attitudes Towards Tattoos

Abstract
Freedom of religion is still a core value held by most Americans today, especially the freedom to not have a particular religion. Tattoos have emerged as powerful indicators of self-expression while retaining some remnants of its historical taboo given the religious landscape of America. However, much uncertainty still exists about the influence of religion, or lack thereof, has on current attitudes towards tattoos. This uncertainty was the primary driver of our research study. We hypothesized that the more religious a person identifies as, the more contrary their attitude would be towards tattoos. Our study found that in both instances where individuals answered affirmatively towards self-identifying as either religious or spiritual, their attitudes towards tattoos followed a similar upward trend.
