Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine, identify, and treat patients with post-stroke depression. Post-stroke depression can affect a patient's willingness to perform activities of daily living, this may result in poor functional outcomes on discharge. Depression is not regularly screened during the acute stroke phase, therefore not regularly treated with the intent to improve functional outcomes. The Patient Health screening questionnaire (PHQ-9) is an available tool that can assist in recognizing and treating depression. This project will determine that the current literature supports implementation of a protocol needed to improve rehabilitation participation.
