Abstract
Veterans may have technical and leadership skills but may lack information on starting a business. This descriptive study is based on the results of 33 completed questionnaires from veterans who own or plan to open a business in East Texas. The software SPSS was used for data analysis. Major objectives were to describe veteran-owned businesses and to identify needed types of assistance and information sources. Other objectives included identifying their core values and reasons for starting businesses, and their attitudes toward risk-taking, ambiguity, and change. They mentioned challenges in gaining customers, promotion, finances, operations, and growth. They desired new information on marketing research, funding, and grants. Past resources used included family, friends, suppliers, and veterans' associations. This study will help small business assistance agencies and community providers in improving communication and in offering seminars and entrepreneurial assistance for veterans.
