Abstract
In the past few years, there has been an increased interest in Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) in our waterways and the negative effect they have on our environment even in low concentrations. As many of these EDCs are man-made the main way they make it to our waterways is through wastewater treatment plants. This problem is only exacerbated by the fact that most Wastewater plants don't treat for EDC. Photon Initiated Oxidation (PIOx) is a machine currently being used at dairy farms that uses Ozone and UV Light to remove fat from cleaning water. As these processes have been shown to be effective in treating against some EDCs, it has been proposed to use PIOx in derogating these EDCs. The goal of this research to determine the effect if any of PIOx in removing Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs), and whether it could be used for this purpose at wastewater treatment plants.
